Recent Journal of Arizona History author Summer Cherland will discuss higher education in South Phoenix, an area that has often been stereotyped and misunderstood. Despite an explosion of college enrollment after World War II, South Phoenix was consistently ignored by county officials and people in other parts of the Phoenix metro area. Cherland recounts the struggle by South Phoenix activists to establish a college “down there” and to improve the lives of the South Phoenix community.
